Right to Wear Crosses Being Challenged

A European court is scheduled to hear arguments concerning a Christian’s right to wear a cross at work. This case will be held by the European Court of Human Rights and will interpret Article 9 which deals with people’s thought, ideas, and religions. It is expected to be a landmark case with far-reaching effects.

The suit is being brought by two women who were separately discriminated against by their employers because they were wearing a cross at their workplace. Nadia Eweida is an employee of British Airways who was suspended in 2006 for refusing to take off a cross. Eweida refused because she claimed that members of other religious faiths were allowed to wear symbols of their beliefs. British Airways has since changed its dress code and no longer allows this.

Shirley Chaplin is a nurse who was asked to either take off her cross or hide it underneath her uniform. She refused, and was banned from working on hospital wards as a result. Since she was unable to work in these areas, her nursing career basically came to a halt as a result of her stand.

Many high officials are speaking out in favor of the Christians. Lord Carey has been very vocal about these women’s rights, claiming that the government is acting as a dictator when it comes to people expressing their Christian faith. Attorneys for the government are arguing that since wearing a cross is not a requirement of Christianity, the right to do so is therefore not protected under Article 9 of the European Court of Human Rights.

In an earlier post, I discussed how an Indiana lawmaker had come under fire for his stand on the Girl Scouts of America. It seems that Bob Morris may not have been far off the mark after all when he claimed that the organization promotes homosexuality and abortion. In fact, one employee of this non-profit group found out the hard way because she was harassed by her supervisor for wearing a pro-life t-shirt at her workplace.

Renise Rodriguez worked for the Girl Scout’s local office in Tucson, Arizona. She is also a religious studies major at the University of Arizona. Early in January, Rodriguez came to her place of employment during her off-duty hours in order to prepare for a meeting. When she arrived at her office, she was wearing a t-shirt that said “pray to end abortion.”

Her supervisor told her to turn her t-shirt inside out, warning her that she could not remain in the office if she did not do so. After being told to turn the t-shirt inside out twice, Rodriguez claims she was so emotionally disturbed that she left the office in tears.

As a result of her harassment, Rodriguez decided to quit the Girl Scouts. She submitted a letter of resignation the next day but did not cite her reason for doing so. She says she planned to mention the t-shirt incident personally with her boss’s supervisor when the time came to do a formal exit interview. Meanwhile, a pro-life group in Tucson has outfitted Rodriguez with several more t-shirts as a reward for her taking a stand against those who wish to silence our Christian voices.

Recommends American Heritage Girls over Girl Scouts

A Hoosier lawmaker is standing his ground after making derogatory comments about the Girl Scouts of America. According to state representative Bob Morris of Indiana, the organization sexualizes young girls and promotes homosexuality and abortion. His opinion is based on quite a bit of research into the group, which he claims is aligned with Planned Parenthood.

Morris was openly criticized for his stand on the Girl Scouts by others in the Indiana House. Planned Parenthood of Indiana also denied allegations they were involved with the children’s organization. Even so, plenty of evidence exists otherwise. In fact, a few years back the CEO of the Girl Scouts gave an interview where she stated “We partner with many organizations. We have relationships with our church communities, with YWCAs, and with Planned Parenthood organizations across the country, to bring information-based sex education programs to girls.”

Meanwhile, Morris isn’t backing down, but instead asks those who are unsure to do more research into the connection between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood. He claims that as a result of his findings, he and his wife have decided not to let their daughters continue being girl scouts. Instead, they are joining and alternative organization called American Heritage Girls.

American Heritage Girls are similar to Girl Scouts, but are based on Judeo-Christian values.  Girls ages 5 through 18 are welcome to join and there are different levels for each age group. There are troops in nearly every state, and you can find one by visiting the group’s website at http://www.ahgonline.org/.

Bible Bill Set for Vote in Arizona

The Arizona House recently passed a bill that would make Bible an elective course in many high schools throughout the state. This bill is now on its way to the Arizona Senate and if ratified would mandate the state’s Board of Education to develop a course for school systems to use. It would not force them to offer the class or mandate that any students take it.

While the United States Supreme Court has ruled that reading Bible scripture in schools is unconstitutional, they do allow its subject matter to be taught. In a landmark case decided in 1963, the high court stated that the Bible has “historical and literary value” and that it could be taught as such. This would be providing that its contents were presented “objectively and as part of a secular program of education.”

The proposed course would explore how the Bible has influenced our culture and society.  According to the sponsors of this bill, studying this influence is important because “biblical references are everywhere”. A Bible elective could help students understand these references as well as the meaning and history behind them.

One of the reasons why Representative Terri Proud introduced this bill was out of concern for teachers. She claims that many teachers in her district are afraid to talk about their Christian faith or mention the Holy Bible. She also claims that Christian principles are what “binds the nation together as a whole”, and that this issue should not divide Democrats and Republicans.

Grammy Awards Begin with Prayer to God

At the recent Grammy awards in Los Angeles, an unprecedented event happened. The ceremony began with a prayer. Not a prayer to Satan as was the case at the MTV awards show a few years back. This time, the show’s host LL Cool J asked members of the audience to bow their heads in a prayer to remember the family members of singer Whitney Houston who had recently passed away.

LL Cool J recited the following words: “Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us. Today our thoughts are with her mother, her daughter and all of her loved ones. And although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit, and to have the legacy of her music to cherish and share forever. Amen”

The prayer was warmly received by the celebrities in attendance, with most of them bowing their heads in response and a few even holding hands during this time. In fact, Recording Academy president Neil Portnow supported LL Cool J’s decision to open the ceremony in this manner. He claimed that doing so was “the right thing to do” and lamented that if it was something he (Cool J) would have done at home then it was proper to do so at the awards show.

Time will tell if beginning the Grammy awards with prayer to our Heavenly Father will become a tradition. We can only hope that more celebrities will openly acknowledge God and hope that it will not take another tragedy to make them willing to do so.

AFA Boycott of Home Depot Stores Continues

Retail giant refuses to remain nuetral in the culture war

The American Family Association is continuing their boycott of Home Depot stores. The boycott is due to the company’s stance on homosexual marriage and participation and support of Gay Pride festivals throughout the country.  The AFA is hoping to encourage the retailer to remain neutral in this culture war and relinquish its involvement with gay festivals and parades.

One of the ways Home Depot has become involved in Gay Pride events includes having employees march in parades while wearing their trademark orange aprons. They have also sponsored floats and sat up informational booths that included activities for children to complete.

In addition to showing up at events intended to advance the homosexual agenda, The Home Depot also funnels much of its profits to gay rights groups. One such organization is the Human Rights Campaign, which aggressively worked to get the gay marriage bill introduced into the New York legislature. Home Depot donated over a million dollars to the group to aid its efforts in that state, The Human Rights Campaign later declared that its “secret weapon” was supporters such as this company.

Thousands of people have already signed a petition declaring they will boycott this retailer until it pulls support for the homosexual agenda. A spokesperson for the company claims it has no intentions of doing so. If you have not signed the petition, you can do so by visiting the American Family Association website at: http://action.afa.net/uploadedFiles/Activism/HDpassalong.pdf. The AFA also suggests printing copies of the petition and taking them to friends or church family members who do not have access to the Internet.

Graduation Prayer Under Attack

The ACLU calls the separation of the ceremony a “sham” and suggests that holding the private graduation is still unconstitutional.

A Nebraska school system is under attack from the ACLU over its graduation ceremony. In Columbus, students and parents are planning a private graduation ceremony for graduates. It’s their hope to include prayer at this graduation ceremony as they have continuously done for many years. While this tradition has been in place for quite some time, the ACLU has only recently become involved in the matter.

Lakeview High School first caught the attention of the ACLU around a decade ago when the organization contacted the school concerning their graduation prayer. School officials did not want to cave in and omit the prayers so they began holding private graduations instead. They are organized completely by parent volunteers and held at an off-campus location.

The ACLU calls the separation of the ceremony a “sham” and suggests that holding the private graduation is still unconstitutional. This is because this event is the only graduation ceremony held each year. As a result, the ACLU argues that students are still being subjected to organized religion in order to receive their diplomas publicly.

There’s no indication the school board plans to back down from the fight. At a recent meeting, members of the board expressed their outrage at the ACLU’s interference in this matter. Some of the students felt that by threatening the school system with a lawsuit, the ACLU was in fact depriving them of their right to have prayer at their graduation. These students are hopeful that they will be able to have their private commencement complete with prayer as has been the case in previous years.

Supreme Court Ruling Recognizes Rights of Christians

Can religious organizations discriminate in their hiring practices by refusing to employ those whose spiritual beliefs differ? The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled on this matter in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In this unanimous decision, the nation’s highest court ruled that religious organizations have the right to select workers whose beliefs are in line with their fundamental values.

Chief Justice Roberts delivered the opinion which stated in part that “The interest of society in the enforcement of employment discrimination statutes is undoubtedly important. But so, too, is the interest of religious groups in choosing who will preach their beliefs, teach their faith and carry out their mission.” The decision applies to priests and ministers as well as teachers in Christian schools who give instruction in religious matters at least part of the time.

In reaching its decision, the Supreme Court determined that religious organizations should be free to develop their own hiring and firing practices with as little interference from the government as possible. The court looked to the history of religious freedom during our nation’s founding and surmised that the reason for the First Amendment was to prevent the government from becoming involved in matters such as these.

Christian leaders are hailing this decision as a major victory for Americans regarding their First Amendment right to religious freedom. This is despite the fact that the Obama administration had argued last October that the plaintiff in the case should not be discriminated against because she had violated church policies during the course of her employment.

Are you concerned about the teaching of macro-evolution as a scientific fact rather than a theory? Have you ever wanted to know more about how science supports the Creation theory? If so, Apologetics 100 is a good place to start. This website has a wealth of information supported by scientific research to help believers make an informed argument for their beliefs and counter false teachings by evolutionists.

Apologetics 100 also contains information to help believers grow in their faith. An overview of the Bible is presented to give information about some of the books it contains as well as their authors. Some background about both the Old and New Testaments are provided to help readers understand how the Bible was compiled.

Many sections contain questions for reflection to help readers understand the material being presented. Consequently, this can be used for individual or small group bible studies. Some of the topics covered include a series on the Prophetic Argument, faults in various world views, and will soon contain video clips.

“The Big Bang Series” explains how the universe was created “ex nihilo”. The literal interpretation of the phrase is “out of nothing”. Scientific research is presented to support the fact that time, space, and matter all began at the same time. The writings here also support the fact that all were produced from an omnipotent, immaterial, eternal, spaceless, and personal being.

Based in Washington, D.C., the American Center for Law and Justice aims to protect religious liberties and preserve the United States Constitution. The center also maintains offices throughout the world to include Israel, Russia, and Pakistan. Some of the issues the American Center for Law and Justice are concerned with include the preservation of traditional marriage, rights of students to form bible clubs, and guaranteeing free speech for those who are protesting abortion.

The ACLJ is headed by chief counsel Jay Sekulow. He studied law at Mercer University and has been involved in litigating tax cases on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service. He is currently a member of the trustee board of the Supreme Court Historical Society and also has a radio talk show.

Since its inception, Sekulow has argued landmark cases before the United States Supreme Court. Some of the cases currently pending in front of the nation’s highest court include the following:

DeWeese v. ACLU- In this case, the ACLJ challenges the position of the ACLU to sue a judge in the state of Ohio because he maintains a poster of the Ten Commandments as part of a legal philosophy display.

Davenport v. American Atheists-This case involves the Utah Highway Patrol’s right to erect a cross on public property to commemorate officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

Freedom from Religion Foundation v. Hanover School District –A case intended to protect the right of New Hampshire schools to allow students to voluntarily recite the Pledge of Allegiance to include the words “under God”.

To become involved in the efforts of the ACLJ to protect Christian liberties, you may donate online. You may also “like” them on Facebook or become a follower on Twitter.
